How to Go From Expertise Notes to Script to Storyboard to Published Reel

Most experts stall between “I know this” and “I shipped a Reel.” The fix is a linear pipeline with gates: notes → promise → script → storyboard → stills → render → publish. Skip a gate and you pay later in regenerations or confusing captions.

This walkthrough is for coaches, PMM, consultants, and operators. It is not a deepfake tutorial—keep likeness and claims honest.

Gate 0 — Capture notes (10 minutes)

Dump bullets while the idea is hot:

  • Who struggles with this?
  • What do they try first that fails?
  • What is the 3-step fix?
  • What should they not do?
  • What proof do you have (process, not fabricated results)?

Do not write prose yet.

Gate 1 — Promise line (5 minutes)

One sentence the viewer can repeat. Template: After this Reel, you can [action] without [common failure].

If the promise needs a semicolon, split into two Reels.

Gate 2 — Script (15–25 minutes)

Structure for ~45–60s:

  1. Hook (problem or surprising clarity)
  2. Promise
  3. Steps or story+lesson (2–4 beats)
  4. Recap using the same words
  5. CTA (one)

Read aloud with a phone timer. Cut words before you cut clarity.

Gate 3 — Storyboard (20–40 minutes)

For each clip fill:

  • Scene: concrete nouns
  • Camera: one move
  • VO: the spoken line for that clip only
  • Must-show / must-avoid

Aim for one idea per clip. Dense jargon gets its own visual metaphor beat.

Gate 4 — Approve stills (cheap QA)

Generate or select start/end frames. Pause on each:

  • Does the still teach without audio?
  • Brand/product accurate?
  • Any uncanny artifact that steals attention?

Reject stills before paying for motion.

Gate 5 — Render and compose

Render approved clips only. Compose the Reel. Add captions and a cover still that survives platform crops.

Gate 6 — Publish and log

Post with a caption that restates the promise. Log: promise, slug, hold rate, saves. Feed winners into series arcs.

Batching tip

Monday: 5 promise lines. Tuesday: scripts. Wednesday: storyboards + stills. Thursday–Friday: render and publish two. Keep two in reserve.

Checklist

  • Notes exist
  • Promise is one sentence
  • Script timed under target
  • Storyboard fields complete
  • Stills approved
  • Single CTA
  • Ethics/claims pass

End-to-end timed example (expert: B2B spreadsheet trainer)

Notes (raw): “People overuse VLOOKUP when XLOOKUP exists; also forget exact match; also don’t know about naming tables.”

Promise line: “Replace risky VLOOKUP with one XLOOKUP pattern in under a minute.”

Script beats (spoken):

  1. “If your VLOOKUP breaks when columns move, it’s the formula—not you.”
  2. “Here’s the XLOOKUP pattern I teach every client.”
  3. Show lookup value → array → return array.
  4. Show what happens when the column inserts.
  5. “Save this; paste it next time before you rebuild sheets.”

Storyboard stills: broken VLOOKUP error screenshot (real), XLOOKUP formula card, column-insert proof, recap card, end card.

Publish log fields: job line, URL, still approver, verification date, CTA.

Gate failures and fixes

GateCommon failFix
NotesBrain dump with five topicsForce one job line
PromiseVague “learn Excel tips”Name the costly mistake
Script180 words for 40sCap ~18 words/beat
StoryboardDecorative scenesMust-show proofs only
Stills“Pretty enough”Accuracy rubric ≥4/5
RenderFix typos with regenFix in captions/board
PublishNo logTemplate required

Batching for experts with day jobs

  • Monday: 5 promise lines from notes inbox
  • Tuesday: scripts for top 3
  • Wednesday: boards + stills
  • Thursday: renders + captions
  • Friday: publish 1–2; schedule rest

Protect Thursday from new topic invention.

Artifact checklist (ship folder)

  • Notes original
  • Promise line
  • Script with beat IDs
  • Still contact sheet
  • Final mp4 + SRT
  • Cover still
  • Metrics 72h later

Stakeholder email (copy)

Subject: Stills ready for lock (48h) Please comment by beat ID. Factual accuracy first. Motion starts after written lock. Credits after lock are change-order territory.

Distribution checklist

  • Captions designed for muted autoplay
  • Safe zones checked on a real phone
  • First comment link / SKU details
  • UTM or unique landing where relevant
  • Day-3 and day-7 metrics logged

Operating checklist for this topic

  1. Write one job line before any generation
  2. List must-show visual references with links or file names
  3. Draft five to seven teach beats with spoken lines ≤18 words each
  4. Approve stills before motion credits useful
  5. Ship with captions, one CTA, disclosure if needed, and a verification date
  6. Log what you will change after three publishes

Anti-patterns to ban

  • Regenerating motion to fix a brief problem
  • Measuring success only as video count
  • Skipping disclosure when using photoreal synthetic people
  • Publishing UI or pack claims you did not verify
  • Adding a sixth proof beat "just in case" after still lock
  • Rewriting the job line silently during render week

Worked mini-example

Job line: teach one reversible mistake viewers already feel. Proof A: show the broken artifact (real photo or UI). Proof B: show the corrected method. Recap: three-step card. CTA: save or open the checklist.

If viewers save but do not click, your teach may already be complete—offer a Part 2 rather than stuffing more CTAs.

Roles and SLA

  • Teacher / PMM owns the job line
  • Design owns still accuracy
  • Producer owns render + publish
  • Legal consults on regulated claims at still stage when possible

Suggested SLA: job line to board in 48h; board to still lock in 48h; lock to publish in 48h.

Field notes and cleanup

Revisit after three related ships. Keep a changelog: job line, proof frames, retention notes, next change. Schedule quarterly cleanup for drifted product truth. Unpublish or rebuild rather than leaving inaccurate teach live.

Soft close — storyboard-first workflow

Prefer concept → storyboard → approve stills → render over prompt-and-pray generation. If you want that loop productized, try Scro. The operating rules above still apply with any stack that lets you lock beats before motion credits burn.
