Troubleshooting Teach Reels: Turn Error States Into Vertical Explains
Map error → cause → fix into stand-alone vertical teaches: what UI to show or anonymize, and when to keep help in-app.

Troubleshooting Teach Reels: Turn Error States Into Vertical Explains
Teach “what went wrong / how to fix” as stand-alone Reels, not support tickets. A good troubleshooting Reel resolves one failure path visually so viewers never open a chat.
SaaS PMM and support–marketing hybrid teams already own error copy. The miss is format: tickets and help centers bury trees of branches; vertical teaches need one error → one cause → one fix. This is not a FAQ rewrite of the whole help center (FAQ teach Reels from help articles)—it is failure-path cinema.
Beat map: error → cause → fix
Default 40–55s map:
| Time | Beat | On-screen | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–4s | Error recognition | Exact error label / symptom users see | Vague “something broke” |
| 4–14s | Likely cause | One primary cause in plain language | Five maybe-causes |
| 14–40s | Fix steps | 2–4 numbered actions | Narrating the whole KB tree |
| 40–50s | Verify | What “fixed” looks like | Trophy marketing UI |
| 50–55s | Soft next | Link to deeper help or sibling error | Hard sell |
If the product has a decision tree, split Reels by branch. One Reel per terminal path.
What UI to show vs anonymize
Show
- Exact error string users search for (crop tightly)
- Controls they must click, with current labels
- Before/after state that proves the fix (before/after that still teaches)
- Harmless sample data
Anonymize or omit
- Customer names, emails, account IDs
- Billing amounts and private metrics
- Competitor data visible in shared screens
- Internal debug codes that confuse outsiders
- Unreleased UI
Prefer real cropped UI over inventing stylized errors—accuracy beats aesthetic when someone is stuck. Annotate proof UI stills on the board so regenerations keep the same strings (annotation for non-designers).
When troubleshooting should stay in-app
Keep the path inside product help (or chat) when:
- The fix requires account-specific permissions you cannot demo safely
- Legal forbids showing the error outside authenticated sessions
- The failure needs a human judgment call (fraud, abuse, legal holds)
- UI changes weekly and social Reels would lag dangerously
- The audience is only existing customers mid-task (in-app tooltip wins)
Ship a Reel when the error is common, visually teachable, and searchable on social/search—and when support volume justifies a durable asset.
Support handoff pattern
- Support tags top error strings monthly (use your real counts—no invented benchmarks)
- Marketing boards one Reel per tagged string
- Support macros paste the Reel and the canonical help URL
- Both teams refresh when labels change mid-campaign (update storyboards when UI ships)
Writing causes without blame
Cause beats should explain systems, not users. “Export ran before filters saved” teaches; “You forgot to save” shames. Mute-safe captions carry the cause in one line.
Pair with claims discipline if you mention reliability or uptime (legal-safe claims checklist).
Choosing the error string users actually search
Hooks should mirror the exact message or symptom users type into search and support forms. Internal incident names (“SEV-2 export path”) do not belong on social. Prefer:
- Full dialog title + first sentence crop
- Observable symptom (“CSV downloads with zero rows”)
- User vernacular from tickets (“invite loop”)
Maintain a mapping table: public hook phrase ↔ internal error code ↔ help article URL. When engineering renames codes, update the table before regenerating stills.
Cause hierarchy without the whole tree
Show one primary cause in-Reel. Park secondary causes in the caption or a sibling Reel titled for that branch. Viewers under stress cannot absorb a diagnostic flowchart in 45 seconds. If support insists on three causes, ship three Reels—or keep the tree in-app.
Demo data pattern
Build a disposable project with fake names (Alex Example, demo@example.com) and harmless payloads. Recapture UI for every launch that changes labels. Never reuse a still that contains a real customer domain—even if “nobody will notice.”
Measurement for troubleshooting assets
Useful signals you may already have:
- Ticket volume for that error string before/after (your counts)
- Macro usage of the Reel link
- Comments saying “fixed, thanks” vs “still broken”
- Saves (people keep fix paths)
If comments report a new branch, open a new backlog row—do not bolt branches onto the original Reel until it becomes a tour.
Example beat captions (export empty CSV)
- Hook: “CSV downloaded—but zero rows?”
- Cause: “Export ran before filters saved”
- Fix 1: “Re-apply filters”
- Fix 2: “Click Save view”
- Fix 3: “Export again”
- Verify: “Row count matches the grid”
- Soft next: “Filters before export—full checklist”
Captions teach alone; VO is optional. That is the bar.
Soft production tip
Annotate proof UI stills on the board so regenerations stay accurate. Storyboard-first flows (Scro included) lock the error crop, cause card, and fix steps before any generative pass—so you do not “almost” match the real dialog.
QA before publish
- One error string only in the hook
- One primary cause
- Fix steps match production UI today
- Sensitive data cropped
- Verify beat shows success state
- Sibling errors queued separately
- Post-render QA includes label check (AI explainer QA)
Troubleshooting Reels earn trust when a stuck viewer can pause on step 2 and finish without a ticket.
