Golden Hour Without Orange Skin

Golden hour warms the light, not the skin into orange. Keep a neutral reference on the shirt or the wall.

Golden Hour Without Orange Skin

Golden hour is a low sun and a long shadow, not an orange grade poured over the face. The light on the lit side goes warm. The shadow side stays cooler. Skin keeps its own color. If the teeth, the eyes, and a white shirt all turn the same amber, you asked for a filter, and the person stopped being photographable.

The sun is warm and low. The skin stays a human color because the shirt did not turn orange with it.

Say low sun, not orange skin

"Sun near the horizon, warm on the lit cheek, skin tone natural" beats "golden hour, amber, cinematic orange." Cinematic orange is how hosts end up looking sunburned in every clip.

Keep one neutral

A white collar, a grey wall, or teeth should not match the sunlight. If every surface is the same hue, the white balance was thrown away. Reject that still.

Shadows get longer, not black

A low sun makes a long soft shadow on the ground. It does not punch a black hole under the chin unless the face is also blocked. Look at the ground before you look at the grade.

A worked example

Street, sun just above the shops, light on one side of the face. The pale shirt stays pale. The shadow stretches behind. A fully amber version is discarded.

Check the still

  • A white or grey surface stays neutral.
  • Only the lit side is warm.
  • The shadow on the ground is long.

Where Scro fits

Approve that still in Scro before the clip moves. The locked face should keep this skin tone when the wardrobe changes. Do not regrade the person into a different color in a later Life photo.

Warm the light, keep the skin. Finished samples are on the examples page.
