One Intent, Three Aspect Ratios: Board Once for Reel, Feed, and Deck

Board one teach intent for 9:16, 1:1, and 16:9 with a shared beat spine plus per-ratio crop and title rules—no three rewrites.

One Intent, Three Aspect Ratios: Board Once for Reel, Feed, and Deck

One Intent, Three Aspect Ratios: Board Once for Reel, Feed, and Deck

Plan one teach intent across 9:16, 1:1, and 16:9 with a shared beat spine—then add per-ratio crop and title rules instead of writing three separate scripts.

Marketers and agencies burning cycles on triple rewrites usually change the wrong layer: the intent. Freeze the teach claim and the beat order first; only framing, title safe-zones, and end cards should flex. This builds on choosing 9:16 vs 16:9 vs 1:1 before you lock the storyboard—here the goal is one master board that fans out cleanly.

What stays frozen vs what must change

LayerFreeze across ratiosAdapt per ratio

Beat order and jobsYesNo
Proof facts / UI versionYesCrop tighter or wider

If the 16:9 deck version teaches a different claim than the Reel, you no longer have one campaign—you have three. Intent drift is how "multi-format" becomes three unpaid scripts.

Shared beat spine (master board)

Write the master as ratio-agnostic beats:

  1. Hook — promise the outcome in one line
  2. Problem — specific failure
  3. Mechanism — transferable step
  4. Proof — UI or metaphor evidence
  5. Soft CTA — next step

Example spine for "export last month's PDF from Billing":

BeatClaim words (frozen)
Hook"Month-end PDF without spreadsheet export"
Problem"CSV dump → broken formulas"
Mechanism"Billing → Export → Last month PDF"
ProofCropped export dialog + dated file
CTA"Save the export path"

Approve this spine once. Ratio notes attach underneath; they do not rewrite the spine. Weekly batches still benefit from one approved style lock.

Master-board fields worth freezing

  • Intent one-liner
  • Audience assumption (who already knows what)
  • UI version date for proof crops
  • Host / character ID
  • Words that must appear on screen (claim spine)
  • Words that must never appear (overclaims)

Everything else is presentation.

Per-ratio crop and title rules

9:16 (Reel / Stories)

  • Subject in center third; UI crops favor vertical stacks
  • Titles ≤2 short lines in upper safe zone
  • Captions avoid bottom UI chrome and platform buttons
  • Host: medium shot; leave chin-to-bottom breathing room
  • Prefer single-column proof; avoid side-by-side that becomes postage stamps

1:1 (Feed)

  • Prefer centered subject; avoid ultra-wide UI that needs pan
  • Titles can sit as a top banner card
  • Proof UI: square crop of the control cluster, not the whole app chrome
  • CTA cards can sit center-bottom without fighting Stories chrome as hard

16:9 (Deck / LinkedIn / YouTube)

  • Side-by-side allowed: host or card left, UI right
  • Titles can be fuller (still one claim)
  • Do not invent extra beats just because you have width—pad with proof, not new claims
  • Useful for webinar cut-downs; see also from one webinar to a week of vertical explainers when the source is long-form

First-frame rules still apply on every ratio; see thumbnail and cover frames that match the hook beat.

Workflow: master → notes → three renders

  1. Approve master spine (intent + beats + claim words)
  2. Attach crop boxes and title placements for each ratio on each beat
  3. Generate or shoot stills for the riskiest beats (usually hook + proof) in all three crops
  4. Stakeholder sign-off on stills, not on finished videos
  5. Render per ratio; if one ratio fails QA, regenerate that ratio only

This is the opposite of "render 9:16, then stretch." Stretching is how illegible chrome ships on LinkedIn.

Anti-patterns

  • Rewriting VO for each ratio while keeping the same messy crop notes
  • Three different hooks that promise three outcomes
  • Stretching 9:16 into 16:9 without re-cropping UI
  • Adding deck-only "agenda" beats that never appear in the Reel (intent drift)
  • Separate style locks per ratio without a reason (visual brand muddle)

Filled multi-surface package example

Intent: "Invite with Viewer role, not Admin."

Master spine (frozen):

BeatClaim words
Hook"Viewer invite ≠ Admin invite"
Problem"Everyone gets Admin → audit mess"
Mechanism"Invite → Role → Viewer"
ProofCropped role picker + confirmation
CTA"Screenshot your invite path"

Ratio notes (abbreviated):

Beat9:161:116:9
HookCenter host + 2-line titleBanner titleSplit: title left, still right
ProofTall crop of role listSquare around ViewerWide dialog + pointer
CTABottom cardCenter cardEnd slide

Same intent. Three crops. Zero rewrite of the teach claim.

Naming and delivery

Use filenames that encode ratio without renaming chaos:

  • invites-viewer__master-board.json
  • invites-viewer__9x16_v1.mp4
  • invites-viewer__1x1_v1.mp4
  • invites-viewer__16x9_v1.mp4

Captions file can be shared (invites-viewer__captions.srt) if timing matches; if proof crops change timing, maintain per-ratio caption pulls from the same text spine.

Stakeholder one-liner

"Same teach. Three crops. One approval of the spine." Put that sentence at the top of the review invite so executives do not ask for a new script per channel.

Soft close

Approve one master board, then ratio-specific frame notes, before any render. Storyboard-first tools like Scro make that master-plus-notes workflow concrete for multi-surface teach campaigns.
