From LinkedIn Carousel to Vertical Explainer Without Losing Clarity
Repurpose carousel posts into stand-alone teach Reels by mapping slide→beat, dropping or merging dense slides, and rewriting bullets into VO or short captions—rebuild as a new board instead of stitching slides into a video.
Carousels reward swipe pacing and list density. Vertical explainers reward continuous attention and one claim. Treating a PDF export as a “video” keeps the density and loses the teach.
When a carousel is Reel-ready
Good candidates:
- One clear teach claim across the deck
- 5–9 slides with a narrative arc (problem → method → example → CTA)
- Diagrams that can simplify for 9:16
Poor candidates (keep as carousels or blogs):
- 15-slide frameworks with nested matrices
- Lead-gen checklists meant to be screenshotted
- Quote mosaics with no mechanism
For long-form sources, the same extraction mindset as webinar → verticals applies.
Slide→beat map
| Carousel slide role | Vertical beat | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Cover / hook slide | Hook (0–3s) | Rewrite for mute; one line max |
| Problem slides (2–3) | Merge into one claim beat | Keep strongest pain only |
| Framework overview | Drop or turn into a later series | Too dense for one Reel |
| Step slides | Demo / explanation beats | One step per beat; max three |
| Example slide | Proof beat | Show one concrete instance |
| CTA slide | CTA card | Above safe-zone floor |
Aim for four to six beats total. If you still have eight beats, split into two Reels (batch weekly teach content).
What to drop, merge, or rewrite
Drop: repeated definitions, logo slides, “follow for part 2” filler, tiny footnote slides.
Merge: three problem slides into one contrast hook; two tip slides into one list beat with three bullets max.
Rewrite: bullet walls into spoken lines or ≤8-word captions. If the carousel was text-led, decide modality deliberately (text vs voiceover decision).
Rebuild as a new board (do not stitch)
Stitching means: export slides → Ken Burns → music. It fails because:
- 1:1 or 4:5 crops fight 9:16 safe zones
- Slide titles sit in chrome danger zones
- Timing follows swipe logic, not watch logic
Instead:
- Write a new intent sentence
- Map surviving slides to beats
- Create new stills for vertical
- Approve board, then render
Use storyboard-first so you do not discover density problems after motion.
Worked example
Carousel: “5 ways to cut onboarding time” (8 slides).
Vertical plan:
- Hook — “Cut onboarding time without cutting enablement—three moves”
- Claim — time sinks are repeats, not missing docs
- Demo beat — template library
- Demo beat — role-based checklist
- CTA — link to full five-way carousel for readers who want depth
You dropped two weak tips and kept the carousel as the deep link. Clarity rose because the Reel no longer pretended to teach five ideas at once.
Checklist
- Intent sentence written for vertical (not “same as carousel”)
- Slide→beat map filled; drops marked
- Modality chosen
- New 9:16 stills—not slide exports
- CTA points to deeper asset when needed
Keeping SEO / distribution value
Carousels often rank in LinkedIn search and get saves. Do not delete them when you ship the Reel. Instead:
- Update the carousel CTA to mention the vertical walkthrough
- Use the Reel to drive profile follows; use the carousel for depth
- Track which format assists demos—your audience may split by role
Repurposing is dual distribution, not a migration that orphans the original.
Design translation tips
- Replace multi-column slide layouts with single-column vertical stacks
- Convert icons-in-a-row into sequential beats
- Enlarge one diagram detail instead of showing the whole framework
- Recreate charts as one insight callout, not a full axes dump
If a slide needs a pause to “take it in,” it is probably two beats—or still a carousel slide.
Rights and source hygiene
Confirm you own the carousel visuals and that customer logos/data were approved for motion formats too. A static carve-out does not always cover paid Reel amplification.
Hook rewriting from cover slides
Carousel covers often say “5 lessons from…” which is listicle energy. Vertical hooks should promise a teach outcome: “Cut onboarding time with three moves—not five slides of theory.”
Map the cover line through a non-clickbait pattern, then verify the body still delivers that exact promise.
QA before publish
- Stranger test: can someone who never saw the carousel restate the claim?
- Density test: any beat still feels like a slide dump?
- Crop test: claim and CTA inside safe zones
- CTA test: does the Reel point to a sensible deep asset?
Team workflow snippet
- Content lead exports carousel PDF + engagement notes
- PMM builds slide→beat map in 20 minutes
- Board rebuild in vertical with new stills
- Stakeholder ritual (intent/claim/CTA only)
- Render + publish Reel with carousel deep link
- Update carousel first comment with Reel link
Cycle time target: same week as the carousel’s peak engagement, while the topic is still warm.
Soft tool note
Whatever stack you use, rebuild the carousel as a new storyboard before render so clarity survives the format change. Platforms such as Scro are built around that storyboard-first gate; the slide→beat map still works in a spreadsheet beside your carousel PDF.
